About us
For over two decades the World Coatings Council has worked to improve communication and coordinate policy on matters of international concern to the paint and printing inks industry. The council provides a forum for exchange and cooperation on major issues and priorities facing the industry, and has established itself as a global voice for the industry. History of the World Coatings Council Over the last several years, common issues facing the paint and printing ink industries on a global level have increased significantly. While it is always a constant challenge for each individual country to manage the myriad of domestic regulations, it has become increasingly difficult to interpret the potential impact of foreign issues. In 1992, in an attempt to improve communication and to coordinate industry policy on matters of international concern, the International Paint and Printing Ink Council (now the World Coatings Council) was formed. The council was established to ensure that the industry, in coordinating the development of policy on international issues, fully discussed and analyzed the global implications. In 2005 the council was granted NGO status from the United Nations Economic and Social Council allowing it to highlight industry issues to the UN and it’s governing body. In 2019, the name of the International Paint and Printing Ink Council (IPPIC) was changed to the World Coatings Council.

The paints and coatings sector is at the forefront of research and development. Formulations are constantly being revised and updated to use more environmentally friendly materials, to deliver improved finishes and performance, and often in whole new ways not imagined before. Formula One cars need products that can save them a tenth of a second a lap – more effective, lightweight paint can help. Self-healing nano-technologies mean workers don’t have to scale wind turbines as often to recoat and repair them. Stealth planes benefit from specialist paints, while specialist coatings are also essential for space travel. More durable coatings last longer on infrastructure, while anti-microbial coatings help stop the spread of illness and disease. There is so much innovation across the industry. https://lnkd.in/eyVuWBvN ABRAFATI OFICIAL American Coatings Association ANAFAPYT Australian Paint Manufacturers' Federation Inc. The global paint and coatings market was valued at an estimated $202 billion in 2024 and is predicted to grow over the coming decade. Hundreds of thousands of people are employed directly in the manufacture of paints and coatings around the world. But the coatings sector’s impact reverberates far beyond these numbers, with downstream industries, such as health, automotive, construction, and aerospace, relying on coatings products. This means other industries worth trillions of dollars each year to the world economy rely on coatings. Moreover, millions of people across the globe use or apply coatings in their jobs every day. https://lnkd.in/eyVuWBvN ABRAFATI OFICIAL American Coatings Association ANAFAPYT Australian Paint Manufacturers' Federation Inc. The inaugural #WorldPaintandCoatingsWeek was officially launched at the European Coatings Show today by Tom Bowtell, President of the World Coatings Council (WCC). The launch backdrop of European Coatings Show 2025 – which this year has over 1,000 exhibitors and tens of thousands of delegates in attendance – served to demonstrate the strength of the coatings sector globally. The Week has been organised through the WCC in co-operation and partnership with its various National Coatings Association members and coatings companies from around the globe. Running from 24th – 28th March, World Paint and Coatings Week is focussed on engaging with the public through social media. The week has been split into five themes, one for each day: essential coatings; sustainable coatings; innovative coatings; valuable coatings; and careers in coatings. Speaking at the launch, Tom Bowtell said: “I am thrilled to be launching the first World Paint and Coatings Week here at the European Coatings Show in front of so many friends and colleagues. All of us who work in the industry know just how important coatings are to the economy and to everyday life. Almost every solid object will have a coating that is designed to make it look better, work better, or last longer – or a combination of all three. However, too often this crucial contribution is overlooked, or not understood, by the general public. World Paint and Coatings Week sets out to rectify that. “So, I encourage everyone involved in the sector to follow the World Coatings Council on social media, share their posts, and to join in with your own company case studies explaining how they are crucial to society. Whether it is through job creation or helping in the drive towards greater sustainability, working at the cutting edge of innovation or providing essential coatings that enable other parts of industry to function. The Week is already a success and I look forward to it growing in scale and scope in future years.” Learn more about World Paint and Coatings Week and where to follow the World Coatings Council and its members at: https://lnkd.in/gFeJFCS8.

Paints, coatings and printing inks play a fundamental role in saving resources: improving the longevity of goods and infrastructure and preventing food waste. They also provide specialist coatings for green energy sources like wind turbines and solar panels. Crucially, coatings also contribute to energy conservation directly through, for instance, reflective technologies for buildings. On vehicles, the more lightweight the coatings, the less energy is required. In the case of marine paints, without anti-fouling coatings keeping hulls clear of barnacles and other debris, the world’s shipping fleet would use 40% more fuel. That is a huge contribution to reducing fossil fuel use. One of the most significant roles coatings have is helping move towards improved sustainability. #WorldPaintAndCoatingsWeek is helping to explain how. Paints and coatings are inherently sustainable - just a thin coating or layer of paint provides protection from degradation like corrosion or abrasion. Watch our short video here to find out more. Coatings play a key role in creating products that help preserve and protect everything, from everyday objects to our most important infrastructure. Aside from providing aesthetic appeal, paints and coatings – including inks - can act as a protective barrier to extend the useful life of the surfaces and substrates to which they are applied. Coatings not only preserve our cars and homes, they preserve the bridges we drive across and the tunnels through which we travel, and they save energy by keeping buildings cooler and harnessing solar energy. They also provide durability and performance enhancement to life-saving equipment, such as ventilators and medical stents, among many other examples. The paint and coatings industry is not only integral to providing products that sustain our daily lives, but also provides jobs for its thousands of employees, and end-use customers. Coatings are essential. Learn more about coatings here: https://lnkd.in/eyVuWBvN #WorldPaintAndCoatingsWeek #EssentialCoatings
